COSTA RICA is a small country, covering less than 20,000 square miles. Located ten degrees north of the equator in the Central America isthmus. This prosperous country shares borders with Nicaragua to the north and Panamá to the south, west is the Pacific Ocean and east the Caribbean Sea.
Discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1502, it was named Costa Rica (Rich Land) under the assumption that silver and gold would be found. Instead the Spaniards found a land with an immense wealth of natural beauty and excellent climate. The colonial period lasted until 1821 when Costa Rica became independent from Spain. After forming part of the Central American Federation in 1848 it declared itself a free and independent Republic. Peaceful Costa Rica, has been ruled by a democratically elected president since 1949. Their constitution prohibits any army, to maintain order and peace the Civil Guard serves as a police force.
